In Memory Of Mykle Mariette

Picture of Mykle courtesy of Terry Bishops' web page in memory of Mykle

Mykle, a long time EDA and two-time attendee at Bearsville gatherings, had been planning on attending the event in 2000, but cancelled about a week before. In mid-September I received an email from a friend of Mykles', Terry Bishop, who sadly informed me that on August 21st 2000 Mykle had passed away due to complications from lung cancer. Terry had discovered Myles' involvement with the Jewel mailing list and the Angelfood Bank while putting together a web page in honor of Mykles' memory and many accomplishments. You can see Terry's heartfelt web page at http://www.angelfire.com/tv/lighting/mykle.html

I announced the sad news on the mailing list that very day, and have included that posting below, along with the many postings by other people who wrote to the list about Mykle and their thoughts about him, and their experiences with him.

.....Sincerely,

.....Mike

Subject: Sad news, longtime EDA/fellow list member Mykle Mariette has passed

Hi everyone.

Sadly, today I received an email from a friend of Mykle Mariette that Mykle had passed away recently. The friend, Terry Bishop, had discovered Mykle's relation with the EDAs while putting together a web page in his memory. What follows is the text of the email I received.

Terry wrote:

Please visit the website that Terry made for Mykle, it's quite nice and there is a guestbook there for anyone who was touched by him to share their thoughts and memories of Mykle.

While Mykle had not been too active on the EDA list via posting the past two years, he was certainly quite an active member of the EDA AngelFood Bank (AFB), having made angelfood/tapes for literally hundreds of EDAs throughout the years. Old timers may recall Mykle being somewhat active in posting to the EDA list from late 1996 through mid-1998.

Southern/Carolina EDAs I am sure will recall the Living Room Tour(s?) he hosted. They had some special moments I am sure some of you will post about in remembrance.

Mykle also made it to two of our annual EDA/Bearsville gatherings!  (in case some of you BV attendees don't recall exactly who he was, Mykle was the older gentleman, a few years older than myself, who at Bearsville 97 handed out dozens of pictures of the Hale-Bopp comet to BVers.) Mykle also was at Bearsville 99, so I am sure that many of you that were there met Mykle then.

On a more personal note, from what relatively little time I spent with Mykle in the past (just that one Bearsville 97 weekend) and more than a few traded emails, I know Mykle was as much a kind and gentle a soul that has ever walked this planet. I envy those friends of his in North Carolina who knew Mykle much better than I, but do not envy them for their loss.

It is a sad loss indeed.

Rest in peace dear Mykle, the EDAs shall remember you.

Your friend & EDA,

Mike

I'd like to pay my respects to Mykle Mariette, who's actions
and generous nature typified, for me, what makes this EDA
community great. He may not have posted that often, but like
the vast majority of EDAs I've had the pleasure to actually meet,
he sure was busy making a difference behind the scenes.
I met Mykle at the first Bearsville Reunion in 97, but unfortunately he
was arriving as I was heading out, so we only spoke for a few minutes.
He wasted no time in expressing how thankful he was for discovering
the EDAs and damn near hugged me to death regarding the Jewelstock
Tapes. As I was saying goodbye, he gave me two 8x10
color photographs he'd taken of the Hale-Bopp Comet, which was a
recent occurrence at the time and just so happened to be of particular
interest to me.  How cool!
Mykle stayed in touch periodically, but I'd usually hear his name
mentioned by other extremely happy EDAs who happened to ask him
for help getting tapes. I know he personally helped HUNDREDS of
list members directly by dubbing Jewel concert tapes and he sure
loved doing it.
I'd hear the same story over and over from people here. It
usually went "I sent Mykle three blanks and postage and he sent
me my tapes PLUS A FEW MORE!  How awesome!"  ...or something like that.
This was typical of Mykles generosity and his love for making
things enjoyable for others.
Almost exactly two years ago today (9/11/98,) Mykle hosted Joy
Eden Harrison, Lisa Sanders, 3rd Wish along with friends, neighbors
and EDAs in a memorable Living Room Concert at his home in Charlotte, NC.
During every intermission between performers, Mykle had fun activity planned
with door prizes. No shabby prizes either! I'm talking concert tapes,
promo CDs and ANWA books.  And by the end of the night, he made sure
everyone left with something they'd truly enjoy (much like when he gave
me the Hale-Bopp Comet photos.)  When the evening was over he then
gave out sets of Jewelstock tapes to everyone before they left.
He certainly enjoyed making new friends, many of them right here,
and he went far out of his way to do it sometimes. He wrote me several
times expressing that although he was one of the oldest EDAs, he never
tired of meeting and sharing music with other, usually much younger,
EDAs; especially "newbies".  He certainly believed in the unlimited potential
for the EDA community and told me so several times.
Maybe in Mykle's honor, all those with concert recordings of Jewel
can copy one for someone without any.

Rock on Mykle wherever you are!        MrBB

I met Mykle at the Bearsville '97 gathering.  Although
I did not get to talk to him much during those few
short days, I will always remember the impression he
made on me as someone with a genuinely warm and caring
soul.  He will be greatly missed.  My thoughts and
prayers go out to his friends and family.

OK I'm gonna do this...
I live in Europe, so I'm going to send the first 3 European EDAs who write
to me and have no angelfood (please don't lie or anything like that) a copy
of one of my angelfood tapes for free...
Again, please don't write to me if you have angelfood already - I'm doing
this in Mykle's honour, and, although I didn't personally know him, this is
a great way to honour his memory.

Thanks,
Tom

I tried to post a little remembrance on Mykle on the guestbook at the
memorial web site, but was having some difficulty.  That's ok, because most
of the people who would appreciate this are right here on this list.  So
here goes ...

At one of our Bearsville gatherings Mykle brought a handsome bottle of cognac.
We camp out in the woods of the Catskills and as it got dark he passed out
cups and many of us sat and had a drink with Mykle.  I don't remember much of
what we said sitting by the fire sharing cognac, but I do remember the
feeling of being with him and enjoying his spirit.  We finished that bottle
before we ever finished the conversation.  He was a compassionate person, a
kind soul and I know he'll be in my memories every time I drink cognac.

If EDA ever makes it into the dictionary, next to the definition would be a
picture of Mykle.

I never had the opportunity to meet Mykle, but he helped me with some of
my very first angelfood.  I was looking for a copy of my first Jewel
concert, and he sent it to me.  He wanted nothing in return.  Wouldn't give
me his address for me to send blanks or postage.  All he asked was that one
day I extend the same kindness to another EDA.  As soon as I received my
tapes, and an extra one, I passed the kindness on.  Mykle exemplifies the EDA
spirit.  His memory will live on.

Subject: The light has grown smaller or how I was touched by Mykle

It occurs to me that any one that had contact with Mykle should pay his or
her respects by sharing some experience that shows how much one person can
touch, move, motivate, inspire, change another without anything other then
who they are and the simple acts that they do. I have been on this list a
long long long time, and i was part of the original Jewelstock tape tree.
That is where i had a chance to make a set for Mykle. WE communicated by
email and things went smoothly for his set of tapes. I then really didn't
have any other contact with him. Then one day in 1997, July 1997 to be
exact i received an envelope from Mykle. It was marked "photographs/do not
bend". How do i recollect so clearly? I still have the envelope. Inside was
a really amazing photo of the Hale-Bopp comet. I have it framed. I am now
going to frame the letter that came with it. This letter was an explanation
of why i had received the photo. I am going to type it here so you can all
see, in his own words, what kind of person Mykle was.

EDA Appreciation Day
July 18,1997
and everyday

Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you again!
I am so very grateful for the list members just like you, and for you
personally, that i am declaring Friday, July 18, 1997(and everyday for a
week) to be my first annual EDA appreciation day!!!

Thank you for your kindness you have shown to me (and all the others you
have helped). When I recently found myself thinking of the experience of
being part of this group, it seemed only fitting that i take a moment to
say "thank you" to the people of this group who have, through there words,
actions and way of being, shown me examples of the friendliness, kindness
and sharing that is still a large part of the newcomers first impression of
this group.
So i have decided to declare a 'holiday of gratitude', during which I would
try to contact each person who had touched my life in some kind or helpful
way and say "thank you" in some small way of word and deed. (Sense that
could take a few moments, I also decided this attention day' could last a
week, or hew ever long it takes).

This past late winter and early spring, I spent a  great amount of time and
effort to track and photograph Comet Hale-Bopp (from the dark skies of the
Blue Ridge Parkway) as it slowly passed by our Earth. It was a beautiful,
moving experience. now that I am beginning to print a few of the first
images with others, in hopes it will remind them of all the natural beauty
that this world hold dear for them, seen or unnoticed, every day we live.

I hope you enjoy this one just for your own, peace, Mykle.

It's very obvious how kind and giving he was a person. If you don't see
that or understand that, then take the time to read what he wrote again.
Read it as many times as you need to, till it hits you how selfless and
generous he was. I sent him several thank you emails and a letter. He never
wanted to accept anything in return. I must sadly say i had little contact
with him over the last two years. Yet, i am deeply sad to know that he is
no longer shinning his kindness and light on the world. Please rest happily
where ever you Mykle.

As part of Allen B suggestion I am going to give some angelfood away to the
first lets say five newbies that email me with the header...newbie/angelfood.

Hi dear EDAs,

As many of you, I was helped by Mykle when I was in need of angelfood. It
was just a year ago, I asked for the video of VH1-Storytellers on this list,
and Mykle replied to my post. I sent him my list of angelfood and told him
to pick what he wanted in return. But all he said was "I'm fine, I don't
need anything, you have some great tapes yet but soon you'll have more".
And so, one day, I received this huge package, and in there I found the
video of Storytellers (plus some early Jewel TV appearances before the
release of POY) AND 12 audio tapes !!!
He knew I was a great fan of Steve Poltz and among thoses tapes he put a few
Rugburns/Poltz, Rugburns/Jewel tapes. He still wanted nothing in return,
just asked me to spread the joy and the kindness around. Since then, when I
read posts from newbies looking for angelfood, I sometimes offer them one or
two tapes of angelfood for free. I will do that more often now in Mykle's
memory.

Also, I remember Mykle was fond of astronomy and last summer occured the
european total solar eclipse, and as I live in France, I had the chance to
go to a place where the eclipse was total and I told Mykle how it was to be
there at that time, and he was really happy I shared this experience with
him :-)

I'm sorry this was long, but it was Mykle who taught me what it was to be a
true EDA, and I am really thankful for that gift.

Rest in peace Mykle.

Emilie

I too, like many many other EDAs received angelfood from Mykle.  I went
through the process of sending him blank tapes and postage, etc.  After more
than a week of not receiving my tapes, I received a very very apologetic
email from Mykle explaining how busy he had been, The next day I received my
tapes FedEx and on better blank tapes than I  had sent him.  It of course
was not necessary for him to go through all the trouble but he did, he was
a caring and considerate person, I am lucky to even have the smallest
connection to such a great guy

I never knew Mykle at all. Never had any kind of contact with him or
anything. The first I heard of him was when Mike informed us that Mykle died
of lung cancer. And that is how he inspired me. I was reminded of a thing
called lung cancer. I've been inspired to quit smoking, once and for all.
I've tried to quit many many times to no avail, but I think its time I quit
for good. Life's too short to die young.

Funny how it sometimes takes something so tragic like this to make people
realize that smoking really is a horrible thing. I hope that I wasn't the
only one who decided to quit smoking.

Rest in Peace, Mykle.

About a month ago I sent out some tapes via the angelfood bank to someone in
NC who said that they would be thrilled to make some copies for me. I was
waiting and waiting and they weren't coming. Finally one day my self
addresses stamped package came in the mail. Inside were my blank tapes and
this note:

Chrissy-- I am returning your tapes. Michael died Monday Aug. 21 -- and I
know he made Jewel Tapes, but have no idea where they are right now. Sorry --
Michael's Mother

I want us to remember the pain that his family must be going through-- I
personally feel that Mykle's (I guess his family spells it Michael) mom
didn't have to take the time to mail the tapes back to me-- I feel awful
that I might have caused them any kind of grief by having that package come
in the mail during such a difficult time. I would like to do something nice
to thank her for sending them back, but I do not wish to cause any further
pain. What do you guys think? Do you think we should send her a little note
or something showing his Mom what kind of influence he has had on so many
people-- We have been spending a decent amount of time discussing him on our
list, maybe we should let his family know how important he was to so many of
us----- Chrissy-----

Subject: Mykle... An idea...

Hey guys!

I didn't know Mykle, as I'm one of the newer EDAs -- I joined sometime in
laaaaate '99, early 2000 -- but I had an idea on how we might be able to
honor his memory (one I'm not sure has been brought up yet) -- what if we
were to donate money to Higher Ground for Humanity, in Mykle's name? (Does
anyone know where we'd send it? MrBB?)

I was sitting here reading about him, and it dawned on me... Hey! Let's
donate money to HGH!  Judging by the amount of emails regarding his passing,
I can imagine just how many lives he touched, and if we were to donate, even
as seperate EDAs and not as one entity, I think Mykle would be proud. (:

What do you guys think?

Subject: My impressions of Mykle Mariette

I spent time with the late Mykle Mariette twice in my life, both times at
the annual EDA Bearsville Reunion. The first time, in 1997, he introduced
himself and handed me an envelope of 5"x7" color prints. They were taken
in a field in the wee hours of the morning, and showed the Halle Bopp
comet streaking across the southeastern sky. Mykle gave them to me with a
broad smile and a request that I distribute them to members of the
"Harris Family".

I didn't get to speak much more with Mykle that weekend because he left
early. I do remember he was soft spoken and seemed to be very a gentle
soul.

The next time I saw Mykle was at Bearsville two years later. We were able
to speak more at length, but the most memorable moment occured as we were
all heading over to the old Pinecrest Lodge to go swimming with Alan
Bershaw and other members of Jewel's HGH organization. An EDA named
Thomas had his car breakdown, and Mykle immediately offered to stay
behind and wait for the tow truck with him. I asked Mykle if he was sure
he wanted to stay, but in his characteristic manner, he assured me that
it would be okay. We spoke a few times later that weekend, but I can't
recall a single thing we talked about.

What I do recall is seeing Mykle sitting on a fellow EDA's car hood on a
sweltering summer afternoon, doing all he could do to make things better
for someone who was not having a particularly good day.

You know, I never did get all of those prints distributed, so if you
should have gotten one (you'll know if you qualified  :-), please email
me and I'll send you your print. I feel I owe that to Mykle. I have also
taken the liberty to post a JPEG of his photograph online for everyone to
see at:

www.theartof.com/print/myklecomet.jpg

From now on, whenever I see a comet or shooting star, I doubt I'll be
able to suppress the mental image of Mykle Mariette sitting in that
field, camera at the ready, waiting for a flash of brilliance in the sky
that only comes a few rare times in your life.

Thanks for the listen.
